Sisu is a Finnish pastille brand launched in 1928 by the Turku confectionery factory Tehdas-Osakeyhtiö Seres, whose chemist Johan Ponkamo spent a year developing a gum arabic and liquorice pastille to answer the Swedish Läkerol; the aroma remains a guarded secret and the fraktur wordmark, drawn by the artist Arnold Tilgmann, has been unchanged since. Sisu won a gold medal at the Liège food fair in its first year, and 28,000 tins were sold.[1] The brand is now owned by the Cloetta group, and its Finnish range — including the salmiak pastilles Horna and Routa and the xylitol line — is published and marketed by Cloetta Suomi Oy.[2]
