Def Jam Recordings, also known as Def Jam or Def Jam Records, is an American record label based in Manhattan and owned by Universal Music Group, specialising in hip-hop, contemporary R&B, soul and pop; it was co-founded by Rick Rubin at New York University, with its first catalogue-numbered releases in 1984.[1] From 1999 until its dissolution in 2014 it was part of The Island Def Jam Music Group.[2] Its label code LC 08427 appears on Rihanna's A Girl Like Me.[3]
