Breakstone's
brand
About
Breakstone's is an American dairy brand best known for cottage cheese and sour cream, sold in tubs that carry the line "Established 1882".[1] It began with Joseph and Isaac Breakstone, Lithuanian Jewish immigrants who formed Breakstone Brothers on Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1897 and sold the business to National Dairy Products in 1928; the 1882 date is disputed.[2] Kraft ran the brand for decades, including the Sam Breakstone advertising character from 1977.[2] In November 2021 Kraft Heinz completed the sale of its rights to Breakstone's to an affiliate of Groupe Lactalis,[3] and the brand now sits in Lactalis USA's Heritage Dairy division.[4]
