About Aquaphor
Aquaphor is a brand of over-the-counter skin-care ointments made by Beiersdorf Inc., the US affiliate of the Hamburg group Beiersdorf AG, which holds the trademark.[1][2] Its ointments contain 41 % petrolatum as the active ingredient under the FDA's over-the-counter skin protectant monograph and are sold for minor cuts, scrapes and burns and for chapped or cracked skin.[1][3]
The brand was developed in 1925 in Beiersdorf's US laboratories and trademarked that year by the company's president, Herman A. Metz. Beiersdorf sold the trademarks to Duke Laboratories in 1929 and bought them back in 1973. First sold to doctors, pharmacists and hospitals in 5 lb containers from 1936, Aquaphor reached consumers directly in 1982; the Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment followed in 1991, baby products in 2003 and a lip repair line in 2011, and in 2012 the brand launched in 25 further countries.[1]
