Small fish sold canned as sardines. "Sardine" names a way of preparing fish rather than a species, and as many as eleven species are canned as sardines around the world; King Oscar uses brisling, among the smallest of them, fished in the North Sea and the deep Norwegian fjords and caught full-grown at 9,5 to 13,5 cm.[1][2] It is lightly smoked before canning and is declared as a fish allergen, printed in capitals on the can.[3][2]
