Rye (Secale cereale) is a grass grown as a grain, a cover crop and a forage crop, principally from Eastern and Northern Europe into Russia; it tolerates cold and poor soil better than other cereals, and belongs to the wheat tribe Triticeae alongside wheat and barley.[1] Its grain is used for bread, beer and whisky, and as a cereal containing gluten it is a declarable allergen in the EU.[1] In Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 rye is 12 % of the grain mash bill.[2]
