Magnesium aluminum silicate is a clay mineral, chemically silicic acid, aluminum magnesium salt (CAS 1327-43-1, EC 215-478-8), used in cosmetics to thicken formulas and keep insoluble particles such as pigments, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in suspension.[1] The EU CosIng inventory lists its functions as absorbent, anticaking, opacifying and viscosity controlling.[1] Its platelets carry a negative charge on the face and a positive one on the edge, so they build a "house of cards" structure that thickens a product at rest and collapses when it is stirred or spread, a property called thixotropy.[1] On the base of Dove Body Love Rich Nourishment Cream it stands between carbomer and parfum; the German trade record for the same article prints the two the other way round.[2][3]
