Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) counts at 29 kJ/g (7 kcal/g) in the energy declared on EU labels, against 17 kJ/g for carbohydrate and protein. This is why a label with added alcohol declares more energy than its macronutrients alone would give.^[1] It follows spirit vinegar on the English label of Kikkoman's less salt soy sauce photographed in 2025.^[2] The Norwegian trade record for the same barcode lists it as "etanol".^[3]
