KitKat timeline

  1. Launched. Rowntree's launched the four-finger bar as Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp.
  2. The two-finger bar was launched.
  3. Renamed. Renamed Kit Kat Chocolate Crisp.
  4. Recipe changed. Wartime shortages changed the recipe to dark chocolate and the wrapper to blue.
  5. New market. Rowntree's licensed Hershey to make Kit Kat in the United States.
  6. Nestlé acquired the brand with its purchase of Rowntree's.
  7. Kit Kat Orange, the first flavour variant, was introduced.
  8. Pack changed. The UK single bar moved from foil and paper band to plastic flow wrap.
  9. The four-finger Kit Kat Fine Dark was launched as a permanent product.
  10. Recipe changed. The four-finger bar switched to Fairtrade-certified cocoa.
  11. Recipe changed. Nestlé announced the move from Fairtrade to Rainforest Alliance cocoa sourcing.
  12. Nestlé announced KitKat V, the first vegan KitKat.

About the range

KitKat is the wafer-and-chocolate bar line Rowntree's of York launched in September 1935 as Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp, renamed Kit Kat Chocolate Crisp in 1937 and Kit Kat after the war; the standard bars have two or four fingers.[1] Nestlé acquired the line with Rowntree's in 1988 and produces it worldwide except in the United States, where the Hershey Company has made it under licence since 1970.[1] The four-finger bar sold in Britain and Ireland used Fairtrade-certified cocoa from January 2010 until Nestlé moved to Rainforest Alliance sourcing in 2020.[1]
