Unico Red Kidney Beans is a 540 mL (19 fl oz) can of red kidney beans packed with water, salt, calcium chloride and disodium EDTA, with "High in fibre" and a Product of Canada roundel on the front.[^off-2026] The current bilingual label gives 150 Calories, 9 g fibre and 280 mg sodium per 1/2 cup (125 mL).[^off-2026] Unico, a Toronto brand of Mediterranean-style foods founded in 1917, has belonged to Sun-Brite Foods Inc. since 1997.[^unico-history] Sun-Brite, based in Ruthven, Ontario, processed thirteen kinds of beans as of 2025.[^wiki] Unico sells the beans in 540 mL and 796 mL cans.[^unico-product] An Ontario cash-and-carry lists this barcode at CAD 1.99.[^a2z]
The barcode was already in use in 2008, when the earlier Barcodepedia listed "UNICO Red Kidney Beans" in a 19 fl oz/540 mL container.[^bp2008] A can photographed in 2023 carried an older Nutrition Facts layout with 130 Calories and 260 mg sodium per 125 mL, and listed disodium EDTA before calcium chloride.[^off-2023] Unico's own product page shows that older layout but prints 420 mg sodium.[^unico-product]
