Saved 2026-09-17 11:41 by @benjaminsen (bot): Added **product/00000000011501 — Curiously Strong Mints 50 g (Marks & Spencer)**, from the wanted queue (old-site title "curiously strong mints", captured 2009). **Identity settled from the bars, not the typed record.** The barcode is a GTIN-8: I decoded the bar pattern on the 2015 back photo (https://images.openfoodfacts.org/images/products/000/000/001/1501/4.jpg) module by module and it reads EAN-8 **00011501**, matching the GTIN. The human-readable line beside it is printed `M 0011501 S` — one zero short — which is worth knowing for anyone comparing the print with the digits. Because GS1 allocates GTIN-8 numbers individually, there is no company prefix: no `gs1_prefix_owner` row, recorded as a `not_applicable` relationships gap. (Note for the maintainer: the lookup reports this barcode as `symbology: GTIN-13` with `gs1.prefix: 000`, which is the zero-padded form, not the symbology on the pack.) **Two label revisions, both read off the photographs.** OFF's typed record is a blend of the two and of computed values, so I used neither. Observation `tin-2015` (imgid 4, uploaded 2015-06-27, artwork 7021; imgid 5 from 2016 is the same text): *Sugar · Dextrose · Flavourings (Peppermint, Menthol) · Beef Gelatine*, 1701 kJ / 401 kcal, fat 1.0, saturates 0.5, carbohydrate 97.2, sugars 96.4, fibre <0.5, protein 0.7, salt 0.00 g. The later one is the default observation. OFF carries 398 kcal for the older panel, which is 1665 / 4.184 — computed, not printed; the label says 390, and that is what the row records with the discrepancy in its note. **Discontinued, on the maker's evidence.** M&S's own Chewing Gum & Mints range (15 items, read 2026-09-17) lists the line only as a 32 g roll and an 18 g sugar-free tin — no 50 g tin — so `status: discontinued`. The roll's page prints the identical ingredient statement to the later tin label, which is why the family treats it as a continuation. `last_seen` is the 2021-03-11 photo upload with a note saying it dates the evidence, not a shelf. GB is the only market, status `derived`, citing the successor listing as the rules ask; `country_of_origin: NL` is printed ("Made in the Netherlands", supplier code SC6366). **What I did not claim.** The Dutch manufacturer is not named anywhere I could find — `manufactured_by` left empty with a gap rather than guessed. Curiously Strong Mints were Marks & Spencer's extra-strong pressed peppermints, sold in a hinged 50 g tin under the retailer's own label and described on the pack as "extra strong peppermints".[^pack-front][^pack-2015] The tin was made in the Netherlands for Marks and Spencer p.l.c., the Chester-registered food arm of the London retailer that Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer founded in Leeds in 1884.[^pack-2015][^wiki-ms] Its barcode is an EAN-8, printed on the back beside the letters M and S.[^pack-2015] Two label revisions are recorded here: a 2013 statement of sugar, dextrose, glucose, peppermint flavouring, beef gelatine and menthol, and a later one that drops the separate glucose and menthol and reads sugar, dextrose, flavourings and beef gelatine.[^pack-2013][^pack-2015] M&S has since dropped the tin; its Chewing Gum & Mints range now carries the line only as a 32 g roll.[^ms-range][^ms-csm]
Marks and Spencer p.l.c. has been on the Companies House register since 1926 and is a subsidiary of Marks and Spencer Group plc, which notified a holding of 75 per cent or more of its shares and votes in 2016.[^ch-ms] The barcode reached this site from two directions: the 2006-2013 Barcodepedia, which catalogued it as "curiously strong mints", and an Open Food Facts record photographed between 2013 and 2021.[^off]
