## About <!--about-->
Zinc is an essential trace element for humans, animals, plants and microorganisms, the second most abundant trace metal in the human body after iron and a cofactor that appears in every class of enzyme.[^wiki-zinc] On a food label it is the nutrient behind a family of added compounds rather than an ingredient in its own right: EU law lists zinc among the minerals that may be added to foods, and Annex II of the same regulation names the salts and oxides that may carry it, among them zinc oxide, zinc sulphate, zinc chloride, zinc gluconate, zinc citrate and zinc lactate.[^leg-1925-i][^leg-1925] EU labelling sets its reference intake at 10 mg a day.[^leg-1169-nrv-zn] This page is the taxonomy parent of those compound pages here.
