Shellac is a resin secreted by the lac insect and used as a glazing agent to put a hard shine on sugar-coated sweets, dragées and coated tablets. It is E904 on the Union list of food additives.[^eu-1333] Because it is of insect origin it is not vegan, though products glazed with it are commonly labelled as suitable for vegetarians; it is the first glazing agent named on the Poppets Toffee carton.[^off-back-2022]
