Calcium disodium EDTA, known in medicine as sodium calcium edetate or edetate calcium disodium, is a salt of edetate carrying two sodium atoms and one calcium atom, and a member of the chelating-agent family; it binds heavy metals so that they leave the body in the urine, and came into medical use in the United States in 1953 as a treatment for lead poisoning.[^wikiedta] In food and drink the same chelating action is used to hold trace metals that would otherwise degrade flavour and colour: the United States label of Mountain Dew Code Red prints it as "Calcium Disodium EDTA (To Protect Flavor)".[^usda]
