Brilliant blue FCF, sold in the United States as Blue 1, is a synthetic triarylmethane dye used mainly to colour processed foods, medications, dietary supplements and cosmetics, and is also known as FD&C Blue No. 1 and acid blue 9.[^wikiblue] It carries the E number E133 and colour index 42090, appears as a blue powder, dissolves in water and glycerol and absorbs most strongly at about 628 nanometres.[^wikiblue] It is one of the oldest colour additives approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, permanently listed for food and ingested drugs in 1969, and is generally regarded as nontoxic.[^wikiblue] It is printed as "Blue 1" on the United States label of Mountain Dew Code Red.[^usda]
