Trocadéro Participations was the French holding company through which James Goldsmith and Compagnie Générale d'Électricité held Générale Occidentale, the investment company that took Cavenham Foods private in 1977 and so stands above the Southport toffee maker J A & P Holland on this site.[^wiki-go] Encyclopædia Universalis records that on 27 July 1987 Goldsmith sold the 51 per cent of Trocadéro Participations he held to Compagnie Générale d'Électricité, privatised that May, for 1.5 billion francs, and describes Trocadéro Participations as the holding company that was Générale Occidentale's principal shareholder.[^univ-cge] Wikipedia puts the block at 34 per cent of Générale Occidentale and says the purchase gave C.G.E. control of the business, along with its interests in the Grand Union supermarkets, the oil company Basic Resources International and the publishers Groupe Express and Presses de la Cité.[^wiki-go]
