Pharmacia Corporation is the American pharmaceutical company that the original Monsanto Company became. SEC EDGAR holds the two names as one Delaware filer, CIK 0000067686, recorded as Pharmacia Corp with Monsanto Co as its former name, under EIN 43-0420020 and at 100 Route 206 North in Peapack, New Jersey.[^sec] Monsanto was founded in St. Louis in 1901 as a chemical maker and bought G. D. Searle & Company, then a life sciences company in pharmaceuticals, agriculture and animal health, in 1985; Searle's division filed the patent application for the COX-2 inhibitor Celebrex in 1993.[^monsanto] Pfizer merged with Pharmacia in 2003 and took Searle over with it.[^pfizer]
The merger that produced the name was agreed in December 1999 with Pharmacia & Upjohn in a deal valued at $27 billion, and in 2000 Pharmacia spun its agricultural business off as a new company under the Monsanto name, the Monsanto of Roundup and seed that Bayer bought in 2018: that agricultural company is a separate legal entity from this one.[^monsanto] The encyclopedia article on Searle dates the merger to 2001 instead.[^searle] Pharmacia's last filing under CIK 0000067686 is a Form 25 delisting notice of 18 April 2003, filed as Pfizer took the company over.[^sec]
