32+Home Appliances is one of the 44 top-level segments of the GS1 Global Product Classification, the scheme that gives every brick code used elsewhere on this site its place in a hierarchy of segment, family, class and brick.[^nutshell] A segment is the highest level of the classification and is defined as a particular industry.[^how-gpc-works] This one covers the machines that run a household: refrigerators, cookers, dishwashers and washing machines on one side, kettles, toasters, coffee machines, blenders, vacuum cleaners, portable fans and heaters and smart-home controls on the other.[^gpc] GS1 publishes its "includes" and "excludes" definitions only at brick level, so a segment such as this one carries no definition text of its own; that is why this page describes what publication 286 puts inside the segment rather than quoting a definition, as the brick pages beneath it do.[^gpc]

34+In publication 286 of May 2026 the segment holds two families, sixteen classes and 140 bricks. Major Domestic Appliances (72010000) takes seven classes and 34 bricks: waste disposing and compacting, refrigerating and freezing, major cooking, warming, major laundry, kitchen washing and major water dispensers. Small Domestic Appliances (72020000) is three times the size with nine classes and 106 bricks, the largest being Food/Beverage Preparation Appliances with 34 bricks and Small Cooking/Heating Appliances with 30, then Cleaning Appliances with seventeen and Portable Air Control Appliances with eleven.[^gpc] The two families divide by size and installation rather than by function, so the same job can appear in both: a freestanding water dispenser is brick 10003712 in the major family and a tabletop one is 10003713 in the small family.[^gpc]

36+The numbering follows the pattern used across the scheme, which is worth stating because it invites a wrong guess. Segment, family and class codes are prefixed by the segment, running 72000000, then 72020000, then 72020200, but brick codes are not: the 140 bricks here fall between 10000820 and 10008513 in one flat global sequence shared with every other segment, so a brick code on its own says nothing about which segment classifies it and only the parent chain does.[^gpc] The ends of that range separate the long-established bricks from the later additions. The original run from 10001928 to 10002035 covers the kitchen and laundry of the time, portable air control arrived between 10003992 and 10005337, the kitchen mixing, blending, chopping and slicing bricks at 10006735 to 10006739, the Smart Home/Home Automation Equipment class at 10007021 to 10007024 with a power-monitoring device at 10007957 and a smart plug at 10008303, and the highest codes in the segment are Personal Body Scales, 10008512 powered and 10008513 not.[^gpc] The lowest, 10000820, is Baby Feeding Aids (Powered), the bottle warmers and sterilisers filed under food and beverage preparation.[^gpc]

38+Ten of the sixteen classes carry an "Other" brick for products a user of the schema cannot place, eleven carry a "Replacement Parts/Accessories" brick, and the small-appliance family adds a class whose only brick is Small Domestic Appliances - Other (10006894).[^gpc] Variety packs are barely provided for: the segment has just two, Cooking Appliances Variety Packs (Powered) (10001991) and Food/Beverage Appliances Variety Packs (10002022), both inside classes of the small-appliance family, and there is no family-level or segment-level variety-pack brick of the kind other segments carry. 40+Several things a shopper would call a home appliance are classified elsewhere, and the boundaries are worth knowing before assigning a brick, because only one brick may be given to a GTIN.[^nutshell] A powered clothes iron is brick 10002023 in Cleaning/Hygiene Products (47000000), under the class Laundry and Ironing Aids, and yet the covers, sleeve boards and cord guides that go with an ironing board are 10008121 here: the Laundry Care Appliances class (72020300) holds nothing but accessories and catch-alls, its four bricks being ironing board and drying rack parts plus an "Other" and a general parts brick.[^gpc] Fixed heating is split off the same way, with household boilers and tank water heaters (10002658) and tankless water heaters (10005479) in Plumbing/Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning (79000000), while the portable heater (10003992), air conditioner (10005317), humidifier (10005331), dehumidifier (10005332) and fan (10005337) stay in this segment. Personal-care machines belong to Beauty/Personal Care/Hygiene, where a powered razor is 10000831, and the Personal Appliances class here holds only bathroom scales.[^gpc]

42+Being a segment of appliances, it says so in its brick names: the qualifier "(Powered)" runs through the small-appliance family, from Knives (Powered) (10001998) to Kitchen Scales (Powered) (10005695), and only two bricks are explicitly for unpowered goods, Air Dehumidifier - Portable (Non-Powered) (10006798) and Personal Body Scales (Non Powered) (10008513).[^gpc] Where neighbouring bricks could be confused the definitions say so rather than leaving it to the reader: Household Vacuum Cleaners (10002028) excludes carpet sweepers, automotive vacuums, industrial floor cleaners and robot cleaners, the last having its own brick at 10007949, and Hot Beverage Makers (10002011) specifically excludes kettles, which are 10002012.[^gpc] GPC is republished twice a year, in May and November, and the classification is the basis for data synchronisation in GS1 data pools, where the upper three levels are used only to reach the brick and are not communicated.[^nutshell]
