The leased file was Identity only: no Meta, no References, no About, so nothing could be corrected or removed and nothing was — Identity is posted back byte-identical. Added Meta and a seven-row References table (gpc, how-gpc-works, nutshell, gs1-prefix, isbn, issn, ismn) and a 334-word cited About. Verified against the GPC browser that publication 286 carries no definition or exclusion text for this segment, for its single family 60010000, or for any of its four classes, and said so rather than inventing a gloss. Recorded the structure from the data: one family repeating the segment's own name, classes Books (60010200), Periodicals (60010300), Maps (60010400) and variety packs (60010100), with a worked brick path down to Printed Books/Compositions (10000926), and the observation that bricks split each class by medium (printed, digital, audio) rather than subject. The substantive addition is the barcoding paragraph, which is the reader's real question on this segment and is absent from GPC: GS1's own prefix table reserves 978-979 for Bookland (ISBN) and 977 for serial publications (ISSN) instead of issuing them to a company, so a book's EAN-13 is its ISBN-13 and a magazine's is built from its ISSN, and no company owns the prefix. Noted that 979-0 within that range is the ISMN for printed music, which GPC gives no brick of its own; that one clause is cited to Wikipedia because the International ISMN Agency relaunched its site and every article path now 404s, so I cited what I actually read rather than an agency URL I could not open. No child categories were created: every node below this segment (60010000, all four classes, and the bricks 10000925/926/927/928, 10004103, 10004105) already exists. Unresolved: no product in the corpus carries a code in this segment, confirmed via coverage and direct entity probes rather than search?field=gpc_code, which is broken and returns [] for every value including exact existing codes (reported separately as feedback).. Textual/Printed/Reference Materials is the GS1 Global Product Classification segment that books, magazines and maps sit under. A segment is the highest level of the classification and is defined as a particular industry.[^how-gpc-works] Publication 286 gives this segment no definition text of its own, and none for the family or the four classes beneath it, so none is reproduced here.[^gpc] Its single family repeats the segment's own name, Textual/Printed/Reference Materials (60010000), and holds four classes: Books (60010200), Periodicals (60010300), Maps (60010400) and a variety-packs class (60010100).[^gpc]
Below the segment the hierarchy runs through family and class to the brick, which is the level products are actually classified against. The three upper layers exist only to reach the right brick and are not communicated through the GS1 data pool, which is why a product page carries a brick code and never this one.[^nutshell] Worked through, the chain reads: the brick Printed Books/Compositions (10000926) sits in the class Books (60010200), in the family Textual/Printed/Reference Materials (60010000), in this segment.[^gpc] The bricks divide each class by medium rather than by subject, so Books separates printed, digital and audio editions, and Periodicals does the same.[^gpc]
