| ## About <!--about--> |
| Cross Segment is one of the top-level segments of the GS1 Global Product Classification, and it is the odd one out: it classifies nothing by subject matter. Where every other segment gathers a domain of goods, this one exists to hold the two cases the rest of the scheme cannot place, namely a pack that combines products belonging to different segments, and a product the published schema cannot yet classify at all.[^gpc] GS1 publishes its "includes" and "excludes" definitions only at brick level, so the segment, its single family and its single class all carry empty definition text; the substance of this segment sits in the two bricks beneath them.[^gpc] |
| |
| It is the smallest segment in publication 286 of May 2026: one family, one class and two bricks, with segment, family and class all carrying the same name. Cross Segment Variety Packs (brick 10000624) covers two or more distinct products sold together that belong to different segments of the schema, GS1's own examples being a liqueur packed with glasses and chocolates packed with perfume; it explicitly excludes combinations drawn from a single segment, such as still with sparkling wine, gin with tonic water, or wine with chocolate, which belong to their own segment's variety-pack brick instead.[^gpc] Temporary Classification (brick 99999999) is a holding place for products that cannot be classified anywhere in the current schema, and GS1 asks the industry to migrate them out as soon as a suitable classification is published, which makes it the one brick whose contents are expected to be reclassified rather than to stay where they are.[^gpc] |
| |
| The numbering deserves a note, because this segment carries the exception to the usual pattern. Segment, family and class codes are prefixed by the segment, running 58000000, then 58010000, then 58010100, while brick codes are not: they run in one flat global sequence shared with every other segment, which is why the variety-pack brick here is numbered 10000624. Temporary Classification breaks even that, since 99999999 is a sentinel rather than a position in that sequence, and it is the one brick code in the scheme that follows neither rule. A brick code on its own therefore never identifies the segment that classifies it; only the parent chain does, which each category file on this site records in its parent field.[^gpc] |
