About United Record Pressing
United Record Pressing is a vinyl record pressing plant in Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 1949 as Southern Plastics by Ozell Simpkins, John Dunn and Joe Talbot, renamed United Record Pressing in 1971, and today the largest vinyl pressing plant in the United States.[1] Discogs names its parent label record United Record Pressing, LLC and notes that records it pressed often carry an etched circled U in the runout groove.[2]
The plant moved in 1962 from 512 Franklin Street to 453 Chestnut Street, where it pressed the Beatles' first North American 7-inch records for Vee-Jay Records and built an apartment-style guest suite, later known as the Motown Suite, for the Black customers, executives and musicians of labels such as Motown during segregation.[1] It gained the ability to press 12-inch records by buying the presses of Dixie Record Pressing, another Nashville plant.[1] Discogs records the acquisition of Bill Smith Custom Records on 1 June 2016, sixteen presses from the closed Rainbo Records in February 2020, and a move to 453 Allied Drive in 2017.[2]
