British video game developer and publisher founded in 1984 by Ian Hetherington, Jonathan Ellis and David Lawson, based in Liverpool and known from 1999 as SCE Studio Liverpool; it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment in 1993 and closed as a studio in 2012.[1] The legal entity Psygnosis Limited (company 01039371) is still active in London; it was incorporated in 1972 as Robert Smith & Sons (Engineers Birkenhead) Limited and took its present name in July 1985.[2] Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe Limited has been its registered person with significant control since April 2016.[3]
