Tómas Tómasson founded the company on 17 April 1913 to make a malt extract drink; soft drinks followed in 1930 and Egils Appelsín in 1955.[3] Lind ehf., a subsidiary of Danól ehf., bought Ölgerðin in April 2002, and in 2007 Októ Einarsson and Andri Þór Guðmundsson acquired it.[3] The barcode prefix 5690542 is inferred to be its own: the Open Food Facts records under that block that name a brand, 30 read on 2026-09-25, carry Ölgerðin brands such as Egils, Collab, Mist, Pepsi and Tuborg, and its data sheet names it as maker of the Mountain Dew can in the block.[4][2]
