About HMV
HMV is a music and entertainment retailer founded in London in 1921, when the Gramophone Company opened the first His Master's Voice shop at 363 Oxford Street.[1] The brand is owned by Hilco Capital and the shops are operated by the Canadian retailer Sunrise Records, except in Japan, where Lawson owns and operates HMV.[1]
Its retail operations were divested from EMI in 1998 to form what became HMV Group plc. After falling into administration, HMV was bought by Hilco in April 2013; after a second administration, Sunrise Records took over 100 of its 127 shops in February 2019, with Hilco keeping the brand.[1] Under Sunrise, HMV returned to Ireland in 2023 and announced openings in Belgium and the Netherlands.[1]
