Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc., trading as Hill's, is an American maker of dog and cat foods and a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive.[1] Its lines are Science Diet and Prescription Diet,[1] and it says it makes every bag of its dry dog food in its own US facilities.[2] The legal entity is a Delaware corporation, number 712623, created on 12 May 1969, with the LEI 5493003XESPG4QRTPS91; that LEI registration has lapsed.[3] The record reports no consolidating direct parent,[4] which disagrees with the Colgate-Palmolive ownership Wikipedia describes.[1]
Burton Hill founded the business in spring 1907 as Hill Rendering Works, rendering for Shawnee County, Kansas, under a contract with Topeka to dispose of dead and lame animals; by the 1930s it was the Hill Packing Company, with a milling division, making farm feed, dog food and horse meat.[1] In 1948 Mark L. Morris asked it to produce Canine k/d, and it became the licensed producer; in 1968 its foods went to veterinarians and pet professionals as Hill's Science Diet, and the company was sold to Riviana Foods, which merged into Colgate-Palmolive in 1976.[1] Five Science Diet products and one Prescription Diet line were part of the 2007 melamine pet food recalls, and in January 2019 it recalled 25 canned dog foods over excess vitamin D.[1]
