About Hanson
Hanson was the British conglomerate that James Hanson and Gordon White created in 1964 out of the Wiles Group as Hanson Trust; its largest purchase of the 1980s was Imperial Group, the tobacco, brewing and food company, which it took over in 1986 for 2.5 billion pounds.[1] The legal entity is company 00488067, incorporated on 8 November 1950 as Hanson Trust Public Limited Company, renamed Hanson PLC in 1987 and Hanson Building Materials Limited in 2003.[2]
In January 1996 Hanson split itself into four listed companies, Hanson plc, Imperial Tobacco, The Energy Group and Millennium Chemicals, and in 2007 HeidelbergCement bought Hanson for about 8 billion pounds; its British business has traded as Heidelberg Materials UK since 2023.[1] Through Imperial Group it held Famous Names, the former Cavenham Confectionery, from 1986 until its management bought it in 1988.[3]
