Arts/Crafts/Needlework is a segment of the GS1 Global Product Classification, which publication 286 defines as all products used in creative activities that involve making things by hand or with simple tools, including products for pottery, woodworking, jewelry-making, weaving, knitting, crochet, sewing, painting and sculpting.^[1] A segment is the highest level of the classification and is defined as a particular industry.^[2]

Below the segment the hierarchy runs through family and class to the brick, which is the level products are actually classified against. The three upper layers exist only to reach the right brick and are not communicated through the GS1 data pool, which is why a product page carries a brick code and never this one.^[3] This segment holds one family, Arts/Crafts/Needlework Supplies (70010000), which publication 286 defines with the same words as the segment itself, so the family level adds nothing a reader needs.^[1] It divides into six classes: Artists Painting/Drawing Supplies (70010100), Paper/Card Making Craft Supplies (70010700), Arts/Crafts/Needlework Variety Packs (70011300), Arts/Crafts/Needlework Supplies (70011400), Arts/Crafts/Needlework Tools (70011500) and Arts/Crafts/Needlework Storage/Organizers (70011600).^[1] Worked through, the chain reads: the brick Artists Paints/Dyes (10001676) sits in the class Artists Painting/Drawing Supplies (70010100), in that family, in this segment.^[1]

Unlike most segments this one is documented almost all the way down: five of the six classes carry their own definition text, the variety-packs class being the exception.^[1] The distinction that decides where a real product lands is power. The Tools class splits craft tools into matched powered and non-powered bricks — pottery wheels, sculptors' tools, sewing and knitting tools, and burning and engraving tools each appear twice, once in each form — so a kiln, a powered pottery wheel and a hand wheel are three different bricks rather than one.^[1] Materials are separated from the tools that work them: threads, yarns, fabrics, beads and adornments sit in the Supplies class, while the needles and sewing tools that use them sit in Tools.^[1] GPC is republished twice a year, in May and November, and users are given six months to move their systems to a new version.^[3]
