Beauty/Personal Care/Hygiene is a segment of the GS1 Global Product Classification, the standard that lets trading partners group products the same way everywhere. A segment is the highest level of the classification and is defined as a particular industry.[1] Publication 286 gives this segment no definition text of its own, unlike many of the bricks below it, so none is reproduced here.[2]

Below the segment the hierarchy runs through family and class to the brick, which is the level products are actually classified against. The three upper layers exist only to reach the right brick and are not communicated through the GS1 data pool, which is why a product page carries a brick code and never this one.[3] Worked through, the chain reads: the brick Mouthwash/Oral Rinses (10000536) sits in the class Oral Hygiene (53181500), in the family Personal Hygiene Products (53180000), in this segment.[2]

Publication 286 divides the segment into nine families: Skin Products (53130000), Hair Products (53140000), Cosmetics/Fragrances (53160000), Personal Hygiene Products (53180000), Body Products (53200000), Beauty/Personal Care/Hygiene Variety Packs (53220000), Personal Intimacy (53230000), Maternity Products (53240000) and Tattoos - Permanent (53250000).[2] The boundary with cleaning is drawn here: the Cleaning/Hygiene Products segment (47000000) is defined as covering products used to clean or improve hygiene while specifically excluding products used for personal hygiene, and those excluded products are classified in this segment's Personal Hygiene Products family.[2] GPC is republished twice a year, in May and November, and users are given six months to move their systems to a new version.[3]
