Lemon-lime soft drink brand of The Coca-Cola Company, created to compete with 7 Up.[1] The name was coined around 1955 by a Houston bottler and bought by The Coca-Cola Company in 1960; the drink itself began in West Germany in 1959 as Fanta Klare Zitrone, reached the United States as Sprite in 1961 and took the Sprite name in Germany in 1968.[1][2] In Germany it is sold in glass and PET refillable bottles, single-use PET bottles and cans, with a juice-free recipe since 2023.[3][2]
