Listerine is an American brand of antiseptic mouthwash, developed in 1879 by the St Louis chemist Joseph Lawrence and named after Joseph Lister, the surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery; Lawrence licensed the formula to the pharmacist Jordan Wheat Lambert in 1881, and it became the first over-the-counter mouthwash sold in the United States in 1914.[1] Johnson & Johnson marketed the brand from its purchase of Pfizer's consumer healthcare division in December 2006,[1] and it is now one of the consumer brands of Kenvue, the company separated from Johnson & Johnson's consumer health division.[2] The name is also used on toothpaste and other oral-care products.[1]
